Fall Classic

By Randy Domingos

The San Diego Sporting Dog Club would like to thank those who made the Fall Classic the success that it was.  Ben Abatti Jr. and Baja Farms donated the use of their alfalfa field outside of Holtville.  The location was great and the field was in fantastic shape for the event so we are very grateful to Mr. Abatti and Baja Farms for the use of their land.  A special thanks goes out to Pat Harris for securing the location.  Mary Sarmiento did a stellar job of organizing the event and taking care of all the details.  We had allot of members volunteering throughout the weekend towing the club trailer, planting birds or doing just what needed to be done. We would also like to thank our Judges Don Barker and Scott Toothacre who spent a hot day in the sun.  Our shooters did a great job.  Thanks go out to Jimmie Philips and his friend Lance who handled the guns.

Saturday was tough for training with very windy conditions.  The dogs still made the most of it given the conditions.  The club provided meatball sandwiches for the Saturday night potluck and we had a nice selection of side dishes and desserts.  After dinner we had a few adult beverages and shared some laughs.

Sunday we got down to business.  The wind died down overnight giving us perfect conditions for the event.  Below were the entrants and the winners.  The participants that finished after 3rd are not listed in any particular order.

Sharon Potter Retriever Handling Workshop
December 10th, 11th & 12th

by Mary Sarmiento

Sharon Potter, whom I think is one of the best trainers in the country, as well as a great clinician, will be escaping the frozen tundra of Wisconsin and coming here December 11th & 12th to hold a Retriever Handling Workshop. Friday night will be an introduction, Sat. will be focused on land, and Sunday on water. The cost is $350. See the PDF flier for more information. E-mail me or call me at 619-659-9393 if you have any questions or are interested in signing up.

The Board voted to sponsor one spot in the upcoming Sharon Potter Retriever Workshop. We will hold a raffle for this spot and draw at the November 3rd meeting. The rules are that you have to be a SDSDC member, you must be able to attend both Saturday and Sunday. If you have a retriever, would like to enter and cannot attend the meeting contact Mary Sarmiento  ASAP at 619-659-9393 or send her an e-mail to put your name in the hat.

Three Agree

Ron Dotson has graciously donated the fine piece of art featured in this newsletter to be silent auctioned at the SDSDC Banquet in January.  "Three Agree" depicts Brittany's at what they do best.  Whether you own a Brittany, have owned Brittany's in the past, are planning on a Brittany for your next hunting dog or just enjoy fine hunting art, this painting would be a great addition to your living room. Start saving up now and plan on bidding for this wonderful piece.

Ron's art will on display at the Rancho San Diego Public Library during November so it's a good opportunity to go see his art at your convenience.  Ron and Wendy Greenwell recently used a painting Wendy commissioned of her GSP's, Greta and Sophie, and converted it to a vehicle wrap for the tailgate of Wendy's pickup.  It came out excellent so look for it at the next club event.

If you would like to visit Ron's website use this link

The Board of Directors Meeting Report

SDSDC Board of Directors meeting minutes, October 13th, 2010. Present were Mary Sarmiento, Pam Felgenhauer, Randy Domingos, Rick Greenwell, Wendy Greenwell, Ed Marr, Brian Bonas and Steve Sarmiento.

Old Business

Gun Raffle
In an effort to stimulate ticket sales by club members the board voted on and approved the award of 10 raffle tickets to the member that sells the most tickets to someone other than his or her self prior to the SDSDC Banquet.

Fall Classic
As of October 13th, 5 dogs have been entered in the October 31st Fall Classic event. Everything is in place as far as location and judges for the event.

Tee Shirts and Hats
Steve Sarmiento reported that tee shirts would cost the club $10 each for a shirt with no pocket and a front and rear logo. The shirts will be sold for $15. Steve will send out an email to see who would like to order a shirt. Steve and Wendy are working on getting a hat quote. Initial information is that the minimum order would be 72 hats with the same logo.

Liability Insurance
Wendy has received insurance policy renewal and took care of changing the mailing address and paid the bill.

After finding out the IRS had the SDSDC on their hit list (along with every other non profit in the country) for a change in the law that required the filing of a 990 form to preserve our non profit status with the IRS. This was done prior to the October 15th deadline.

In the Field

Wendy and Hank (Greenwell's Goldeneye Hank) after he passed his first hunt test 10/10/10.

Biff Ellington sent in these pictures of Mike Moran and Roxie from their hunt in Alberta. Birds were scarcer than normal and they had a late harvest to boot so we didn't do as well as previous trips.  But it was fun and Roxie did well for her first field hunt.

Fun in the duck blind with Steve Sarmiento.
